District seeks project lead to guide the future use of Turkey Head (Spewhung)

January 31, 2024

The future of Turkey Head (Spewhung) is in focus as the District of Oak Bay is seeking a project lead to guide the process to establish the long-term future use of the site.

Oak Bay Council has directed staff to secure a project lead to guide the future use of the Turkey Head (Spewhung) site that reflects the District’s objectives, including First Nations partnership, sustainable financial return, site activation and public use, and environmental stewardship.

“Council looks forward to taking this next step in developing the long-term vision of Turkey Head (Spewhung)” said Mayor Kevin Murdoch. “This Project Lead will help advance the technical work while facilitating Council, District Staff, First Nation partners, and our community in exploring the future of the site that aligns with community objectives.”

The short-term lease with Oak Bay Marine Group (OBMG) for the Marina buildings and associated water lot expires at the end of 2027. The marina restaurant building is currently vacant and no longer being leased by OBMG. Use of the site beyond 2027 has not yet been determined, nor has a decision been reached regarding future use of the vacant restaurant.
