Beekeeping is a great way to help plants grow better and increase fruit and vegetable production.
When managed well, it’s safe to keep bees in residential areas.
Steps to Becoming a Beekeeper:
1. Learn about beekeeping:
Read about local and provincial rules for beekeeping and best practices to keep bees healthy. Check out local beekeeping associations like the Capital Region Beekeepers Association to learn more.
2. Register your hives:
All beehives in BC must be registered with the Province.
- Read the Oak Bay beekeeping bylaw
- Read the apiculture information on the Province’s Animal Production Website
- Fill out the Application for Keeping Bees or Poultry
3. Set up your beehives:
Once you’re familiar with the rules and safety, you can buy and set up your beehives. Make sure the hives meet the required height, distance, and shielding guidelines.
Reporting a Honeybee Swarm:
If you see a swarm of honeybees, contact the Capital Region Beekeepers Association at 250-900-5787 or email Swarms@capitalregionbeekeepers.ca.
