You can keep hens (female chickens) on your property, but not roosters. This guide is here to help you raise hens responsibly and keep good relations with neighbours.
Steps to Success:
1.Learn how to care for hens:
Proper care keeps hens healthy, helps with egg production, and avoids issues with pests and neighbours. Research the space, time, and equipment you’ll need.
2. Check the bylaws:
Oak Bay has rules for raising hens, such as the size and location of the chicken coop. These rules make sure the hens are healthy and treated well. You can have up to:
- 5 hens on lots smaller than 1,114 square meters
- 10 hens on lots larger than 1,114 square meters
3. Build a compliant chicken coop:
Make sure your coop meets Oak Bay’s rules.
4. Get a permit:
Don’t get hens until you have the required permit. Fill out the application form.
