Advancements of the BC Energy Step Code and Introduction of the Zero Carbon Step Code
As of September 1, 2024, advancements are planned for new builds in the District of Oak Bay for the BC Energy Step Code and introduction of the Zero Carbon Step Code. This includes:
Houses, Duplexes, Multiplexes and Townhouses (Part 9 Buildings)
- Introduction of the Zero Carbon Step Code at EL:4
Residential Buildings of Six Storeys or Less (Part 3 Buildings)
- Advancement from Energy Step Code Level 2 to 3
- Introduction of the Zero Carbon Step Code at EL:4
As of November 1, 2024, all new part 3 buildings (Residential and Commercial) will see the introduction of the Zero Carbon Step Code.
What is the BC Zero Carbon Step Code (ZCSC)?
The BC ZCSC regulates the carbon emission associated with operating buildings. These new regulations apply to new construction applications and do not apply to renovations or building retrofits.
What is the BC Energy Step Code (ESC)?
The BC ESC is a province-wide performance standard requiring new buildings to attain higher energy performance by meeting set targets for the building envelope, mechanical system efficiency and airtightness.
