Property Tax Penalties

After July 2, 2024: There will be a 10% tax penalty on unpaid current property taxes.

 

Home Owner Grants

Starting in 2021, the Province of BC centralized the administration of the Home Owner Grant program. Eligible residents will apply online directly with the Province of BC. please visit: www.gov.bc.ca/homeownergrant, or call 1-888-355-2700 to speak with a live Province of BC representative.

In order to apply online, you will need a Jurisdiction and Roll Number.   Oak Bay’s jurisdiction number is 317.    Your Roll Number is stated on your tax notice.

    • Log onto online banking with your financial institution.
    • If you do not have online banking, contact your bank to set it up.
    • Add the District of Oak Bay as a payee.

    • Use the eight digit folio number (numbers only) shown on your tax notice as your account number.

    • Enter the appropriate payment amount.
    • Record your transaction number as proof of payment to keep with your payment information.

    Paying by Drop Box

    A secure drop box is located at the front entrance doors at Municipal Hall. The locked drop box is emptied and processed daily. Please do not put cash in the drop box. Ensure cheques are signed, dated, and the body and figures match. Cheques must be in Canadian Dollars. 

    Paying by Mail

    Mail remittances to 2167 Oak Bay Ave, Victoria, BC, V8R 1G2. Payment must be received at the Oak Bay Municipal Hall by the tax due date or, if mailed within Canada, with a legible postmark dated prior to the date shown on the back of the tax notice, to avoid penalty. Please note that if this option is chosen, mail lost by the Post Office will be subject to penalties.

    Paying through Financial Institution

    Most Canadian financial institutions permit payment in person, by phone, or internet banking and at most Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).

    Please note, that if you pay after your financial institution’s local cut off time on the due date, your payment may be processed with a “payment date” equal to the next business day.

    Pre-Authorized Withdrawal Plan

    The Property Tax Pre-Authorized Withdrawal Plan is an optional payment plan that allows taxpayers to make up to 10 equal monthly payments between August and May inclusive by authorizing automatic withdrawals from their chequing account. 

    The amount of pre-payment may be up to 95% of the previous year’s net property taxes, after any applicable Home Owner Grant is deducted. This plan also offers interest from January 1 through to the annual tax due date.

    The plan can be started at any time by completing and submitting an application form and a void cheque or a pre-authorized payment form from your financial institution.

    Paying at Municipal Hall

    Pay in person at the Municipal Hall (2167 Oak Bay Ave, Victoria, BC, V8R 1G2). Municipal Hall is open from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday - Friday. You can pay using cash, debit card, or cheque. Credit cards are not accepted for property tax payments. A dropbox located at the front entrance may be used to submit cheque payments 24/7.
