Oak Bay Cenotaph restoration now complete

The District of Oak Bay is pleased to announce that the $75,000 restoration of the Oak Bay Cenotaph is now complete thanks in part to a $25,000 grant from Veterans Affairs Canada.

“We are proud to support the District of Oak Bay in the restoration of their community’s cenotaph—a solemn space to honour local citizens who sacrificed for our freedom. Thanks to our government’s Commemorative Partnership Program, we are helping to ensure the memory of all those who have served and continue to serve our country in times of war, military conflict and peace is remembered by all Canadians,” said the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence

The Cenotaph, which was constructed in 1948 by James Saul, has undergone extensive repairs to restore the unique memorial including refurbishing the monument, path and stairs. In addition to the extensive repairs, the site has undergone alterations to improve accessibility, promote inclusiveness and enhance user experience and comfort.

The monument’s central figure is Mother Peace, with her arms extended, sheltering the Roll of Honour that pays tribute to the 97 Oak Bay citizens who lost their lives during the Second World War.  In 2004, bronze plaques to honour those lost in the First World War, Korea, and those lost serving in the United Nations Peacekeepers and Canadian Merchant Navy were installed.

“We appreciate Veterans Affairs Canada’s commitment to honouring those who served and their dedication to recognizing their achievements and sacrifices,” said Mayor Kevin Murdoch. “The Oak Bay Cenotaph is a very special place within our community and the revitalization provides the opportunity to enhance its use as a place of remembrance and reflection.”

The District of Oak Bay would also like to extend a special thank you to the members of the Oak Bay Cenotaph Task Group for the extensive work to set the stage for the restoration.
