On Sunday, November 23, 2014 at 12:16 hours, Oak Bay Fire Department manpower and apparatus responded to the 1200 block of Monterey Avenue for a report of a structure fire. On arrival of Oak Bay Firefighters, smoke was showing from the basement of a two-storey single family dwelling. Further investigation revealed that there was a fire located in a basement bedroom suite. A fast attack with hand lines by firefighters contained the fire to the bedroom suite preventing further damage to the home. A fire investigation was conducted and it was determined that the misuse of candles was the cause of the fire.
It is important to note that there were no injuries to the occupants of the residences. This is attributed to the fact that both family dwellings had working smoke alarms.
