Heat Warning - Heat Safety Tips

A heat warning has been issued by Environment Canada for the Greater Victoria region. The warning, as of Monday July 8, is in place through the evening of Tuesday, July 9.

Please take extra caution during these high temperatures, be sure to check in on friends, family and neighbours, and follow these tips:

Cooling Spaces

If you need to find a space to keep cool during high temperatures, you can visit these cooling spaces during open hours:

  • Oak Bay Recreation Centre - 1975 Bee St - 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • GVPL - Oak Bay Branch  -1442 Monterey Ave - 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. (7:00 p.m. close Tuesday)
  • Monterey Recreation Centre - 1442 Monterey Ave - 8:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Ways to stay cool!

  • Cool off at Carnarvon Water Park
  • Take a dip at Willows Beach
  • Visit one of the cooling spaces above

Prepare your home

Here are simple steps to prepare your home for high temperatures:

  • Prepare jugs of water with ice
  • Close curtains, blinds during peak temperatures
  • Keep windows closed between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., opening at night to let cool air in

Know the signs of heat illness!

  • Pale, cool, moist skin
  • Heavy sweating
  • Muscle cramps
  • Rash
  • Swelling, especially hands and feet
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Lightheadedness and/or fainting
  • Headache
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
