Wildland Fires

Wildfires are becoming a greater concern for BC residents.

We’ve all seen the news coverage of the fires in the interior of BC and you may wonder if it could happen here in Oak Bay. Yes, it can, especially within Uplands Park and Mt. Tolmie.

There are steps you can take to reduce the chance of your home or outbuilding catching fire or to lessen the damage from a nearby wildfire. Check out the FireSmart Begins at Home Guide and the BC Forest Service website.

Every year, the Fire Department visits homes within Oak Bay that are at risk of wildfires.  They would be happy to speak with you about your level of risk and what you can do to mitigate it. Contact them at 250-592-9121.

Urban Fires

Of course there is a much better chance that you could be caught in a home or office fire.  We all know that fire is a quick killer.

In just 3 minutes a fire can consume an entire room- a fire doubles in size every 30 seconds. Most deaths related to residential fires are due to smoke inhalation.

It is commonly termed the silent killer.  When your smoke detector activates, you need to initiate your evacuation plan to get everyone out of the house or building safely and quickly. You need to practice this plan regularly.

You should immediately evacuate when fire breaks out  or when you feel your life is threatened, call 9-1-1 and then go to a pre-determined meeting place. 

How many parents practice a fire drill at home with your children?

Schools have regular fire drills in order to ensure that everyone knows how to get out of the building safety and quickly. Children also need to practice how they should evacuate from their room, home and neighbourhood.
